On October 24, 2018, IERES hosted Ivan Krastev, well-known Bulgarian scholar currently in residence at the Library of Congress, for a presentation and discussion. Dr. Krastev delivered a provocative and comprehensive rundown of the political and security environment in Europe. He referenced internal and external factors to explain the calculus of the current situation in Europe and contemporary European thought. Dr. Krastev discussed a broad range of issues, both historical and contemporary, to including Ukrainian autocephaly, the political turmoil within the EU, and the influences of China, Russia, and the United States, to draw conclusions about the strength and future of an integrated Europe. He was joined in this presentation by the Ambassador of Bulgaria to the United States, the Honorable Tihomir Stoytchev.
