Programs

The Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies is home to seven internationally prominent programs that bring opportunities for both students and scholars. Explore our programs below and the work we do to promote and support the study of Europe and Eurasia through research, courses, events, and publications.

The Program on New Approaches to Research and Security in Eurasia (PONARS Eurasia) is a network of over 125 academics, mainly from North America and post-Soviet Eurasia, advancing new approaches to research on security, politics, economics, and society in Russia and Eurasia.

The Central Asia Program (CAP) promotes high-quality academic research on contemporary Central Asia, and serves as an interface for the policy, academic, diplomatic, and business communities.

The Illiberalism Studies Program studies the different faces of illiberal politics and thought in today’s world, taking into account the diversty of their cultural context, their intellectual genealogoy, the sociology of their popular support, and their implications on the international scene.

Director: Marlene Laruelle

The Petrach Program on Ukraine conducts a large number of activities that improve the understanidng of Ukraine in the United States. The Petrach Ukrainian Studies Fellowship brings to the Institute scholars working on contemporary Ukraine in any area of the humanities and social sciences.

The Russia Program is responding to the challenges of studying Russia after February 24 with the creation of a novel research ecosystem that renews our methodological toolkit, creates new knowledge commons, focuses on key research questions, and reengages with Russians—all on a platform designed to spread knowledge to a broader audience.

The Transatlantic Program studies the evolution of the transatlantic relationship, the political and societal changes of European states, and engages with the practicionners’ community on both sides of the ocean to develop both academic and policy solutions. 

Director: Erwan Lagadec

The Arctic Program is a NSF sponsored international research network that promotes meaningful dialogue about Arctic urban sustainability issues among policymakers and the public, and also provides support and materials to educators wishing to promote education on these Arctic issues.
